Conchobhar Shortstone is a handsome, honey-tongued gnome who wears a foppish purple hat, an eye patch, and a white silk shirt, and carries a dandyish cane. His appearance is that of someone pretending to be a pirate, rather than a true buccaneer. Conchobhar is a professional gambler who made the mistake of drinking with the Wormwood’s crew one night and failed to notice
the cosh in a crew member’s hand until it was too late. Conchobhar is resigned to his fate but is
determined to make the most of it, as he’s always yearned for the sea anyway. One thing dominates Conchobhar’s thinking—himself.

Roger D. Bell was working on him on lookout duty, where he found the gnome to be facitious. Conchobhar expressed his annoyance that he didn’t get a chance to work with any of the women. Eventually he revealed that he finds Rosie Cusswell to be magnificent. Roger attempted to say that Rosie was a Wormwood plant, but that angered Conchobhar.

Shortstone was approached by the party and was encouraged to sing while Rosie was playing. With the urging of Roger, he was pushed ahead the last step he needed, and performed a stirring solo. The two bards performed a duet and Rosie expressed her approval of him, leading Conchobhar to approve of the party.

When the party was to raid the Man’s Promise, he joined them and helped them take the wheel.
